6-Days Kilimanjaro Rongai Route Trek – dreamquest safaris

6-Days Kilimanjaro Rongai Route Trek

Overview: The Rongai Route is one of the less-traveled paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a quieter, more remote trekking experience. Starting on the northern side of the mountain, near the Kenyan border, this route provides incredible views of the Kenyan plains and the mountain’s rugged landscape. The Rongai Route is known for its gradual ascent, making it a great option for those looking for a more leisurely trek with fewer crowds. Over the course of six days, you’ll journey through varied ecosystems, from lush farmlands to alpine desert, before reaching the snow-capped summit of Uhuru Peak – the highest point in Africa.

Day 1: Nalemuru Gate to Simba Camp
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins after breakfast in Moshi, where you’ll drive to the trailhead at Nalemuru Gate. After registering with park authorities, the trek starts through scenic farmland and pine forests. The gentle hike offers beautiful views as you make your way to Simba Camp for the night. With an elevation gain from 6,398 ft to 8,563 ft (1,950 m to 2,610 m), the first day’s trek takes about 3-4 hours, easing you into the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikelelwa Camp
Today, the journey continues uphill as you move through striking heathland and into the rugged moorlands. The path becomes more challenging but rewarding as you ascend to Kikelelwa Camp at 11,811 ft (3,600 m). Covering an elevation gain of more than 3,000 ft, the day’s hike will take between 6-8 hours, with stunning views of the Kilimanjaro landscape unfolding around you.

Day 3: Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
The trek on Day 3 is shorter but steeper, offering a more challenging climb. As you cross the surreal, lunar-like desert, you’ll reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp, which sits at the base of the rugged Mawenzi Peak at 14,160 ft (4,315 m). Though it’s only 3-4 hours of hiking, the increasing altitude makes this part of the journey a true test of endurance.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut
Day 4 brings you across the desolate yet awe-inspiring Saddle, a vast stretch of rocky wilderness between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. After 4-5 hours of hiking, you will reach Kibo Hut at 15,430 ft (4,700 m), your basecamp for the summit. Here, you will rest and prepare for the most demanding day – the final ascent to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Horombo Hut
At midnight, the push for the summit begins. Ascending under the stars, you’ll make your way to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 19,341 ft (5,895 m). Reaching Gilman’s Point at dawn, you’ll witness an unforgettable sunrise over the roof of Africa. After conquering the summit, you will descend back to Kibo Hut for some rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut at 12,100 ft (3,700 m), where you’ll spend the night. The total hiking time for this epic day is around 6-8 hours to the summit, and another 6-8 hours to Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
On the final day, you will descend through lush rainforest, making your way down to Marangu Gate. With an elevation drop from 12,100 ft to 6,398 ft (3,700 m to 1,950 m), the descent will take 5-7 hours. At the gate, you’ll celebrate your incredible achievement and receive your well-earned summit certificates. Afterward, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi to rest and reflect on your adventure.
