Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
After landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Situated at an elevation of 900m/2,952ft, the hotel offers a comfortable space for you to relax, recover from your journey, and prepare for the trek. You will meet your guides for a briefing, ensuring you’re all set for the upcoming adventure.
Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The adventure begins after breakfast as we drive to Machame Gate. Once all formalities are complete, the trek begins through lush rainforest, filled with unique flora and fauna. The trail gradually ascends to Machame Camp, where you’ll be treated to a magnificent view of the Shira Plateau. Elevation gains from 1,490m/4,890ft to 2,850m/9,350ft over a 5-7 hour hike set the stage for the days ahead.
Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
After an early breakfast, you’ll set off on a steep ascent through forest paths, emerging into the open moorland zone. As you gain elevation, the vistas open up, offering incredible views of Mount Meru and the expansive Shira Plateau. By the end of the 5-7 hour trek, you’ll reach Shira Camp, located at 3,810m/12,500ft, where you can enjoy the panoramic scenery.
Day 4: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Today’s trek is an essential day for acclimatization. The trail takes you through the stunning alpine desert, gradually climbing to the iconic Lava Tower at 4,630m/15,190ft, where you’ll stop for lunch. Afterward, you’ll descend into the Barranco Valley, offering mesmerizing views of the towering Western Breach. This descent to Barranco Camp at 3,995m/13,110ft is part of the acclimatization process, helping your body adjust to the altitude during the 6-8 hour hike.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day starts with a challenging yet exhilarating climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep rocky ridge that rewards you with breathtaking views of the valley below. From there, you’ll hike through morestunning landscapes before reaching Karanga Camp at 4,200m/13,780ft after 4-6 hours of hiking. This day’s journey is shorter, allowing you to conserve energy for the upcoming summit attempt.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today’s trek takes you through the arctic desert toward Barafu Camp at 4,680m/15,350ft. As you cross this barren landscape, you’ll witness awe-inspiring views of Uhuru Peak, Mawenzi, and the glaciers surrounding the summit. Upon reaching Barafu Camp after a 3-4 hour hike, you’ll rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. The anticipation of reaching Africa’s highest point builds as you settle in for a few hours of sleep.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp
The final ascent begins at midnight under a blanket of stars. The climb is steep and rocky, pushing your limits as you make your way to Stella Point at 5,750m/18,865ft, just in time to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the horizon. From Stella Point, it’s an easier trek to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m/19,341ft, where you’ll stand proudly at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. After taking in the incredible views, you’ll begin the descent back down to Mweka Camp at 3,100m/10,171ft for a well-deserved rest after a total of 12-16 hours of hiking.
